What an implant is. |

Let's go back to the principal definition of what the function of human teeth is about. TEETH are bony formations in the mouth cavity serving to capture, hold, and process food mechanically. Human teeth also participate in the formation of speech sounds. To perform all these functions in a good manner, a human being must have 32 permanent teeth. Tooth losses due to either their bad condition, insufficient prophylaxis or accidents, affect the numerous tooth functions negatively. Which in turn causes the overall health of the person to decline. Just to prevent all the above mentioned disturbances in the condition and function of the teeth, a branch of dentistry, implantology (dental implantation, dental implant surgery or placement), has been developing for a good 30 years.

Dental implantation is an indispensable activity of any dental clinic; it is becoming an ever more popular way to restore a dentition by the day. The word "implantation" is derived from the Latin "im (in)" for "in" or "inside" and "plantatio" for "plantation" meaning "fixation". Therefore, "dental implantation" stands for "tooth implant fixation". A tooth implant is a pivot 3 to 5 mm in diameter. Materials utilized to produce tooth implants include titanous metals (titanium and zirconium) that have already performed well in implantology (for instance, in limb prosthetics).
A
tooth implant is fixed in the bone and serves as a bearer for the
artificial tooth (denture). It can be spiral, cylindrical or platelike
in shape, resemble a natural tooth, have cortical onlays, and be stepped
or tubular. The guaranteed service period for a tooth implant ranges
between 5 and 15 years. It has to be mentioned that dental implantation
procedures have to be preceded by an obligatory comprehensive evaluation
of the patient's general health.
To select a tooth implant type in an individualized manner, the patient's teeth and gums are examined using X-ray imaging. The dentist will first employ mouth cavity sanation to thoroughly prepare the patient for dental implantation. There are a number of contraindications for dental implantation in individuals with diabetes mellitus, thyroid disturbances, and oncological diseases. But state-of-the-art implantation dentistry has ensured that the success of this treatment and the durability of tooth implants depend predominantly on the dentist's qualification and the expedience of postoperative prosthetics. Still, the success of this procedure also rests on the patient's adherence to the doctor's recommendations! All patients should keep this in mind.
